The Chief and I went down to Baja, Mexico for a nice getaway weekend and stayed at a place we’d never been before. It’s one of those small places with 8-10 themed rooms, and it was RIGHT on the coast. Stairs led down the cliff off the terrace and spit you out on the beach. We had the best room, the only one with a second story view.
Our room’s theme was Polynesian and was predictably over the top. The large tropical mural on the left wall was actually quite good, and the tiki palm fronds were hokey but fun. What we both liked best about the space was how the bed was raised up a bit from the rest of the room on a low platform. It was a very effective way to create a sense of place, and I’m keeping it in mind for future use. I think many bedrooms are not large enough to do this trick, but if you can raise an area at the end of the room where you have your bed, it really elevates (pun intended) the nature of the room.
